Welcoming the world: The 2024 T20 Menâs World Cup
Despite the false dawn of American Pro Cricket, the global game has certainly not given up on the U.S.! The undoubted appeal of the T20 format, the growing wealth and influence of the South Asian diaspora in the U.S., and the emerging marketing might of the Indian Premier League (IPL) have all come together to make expansion of cricket in the U.S. the number-one objective for cricketâs global administrators in the 2020s.
The commitment of the ICC to cricket in the U.S. was shown by the awarding of the 2024 T20 Menâs World Cup â fast becoming the premier ICC competition in terms of sponsors, advertising, and viewership â to the West Indies and the United States as joint hosts. The staging of an event that boasts a billion-plus global viewers is a huge coup for the game in America as it brings the worldâs best players to the nation in a competition for the very first time.
Hereâs what you need to know about the 2024 T20 Menâs World Cup:
Both the West Indies and the U.S. qualify for the tournament as host nations.
All the sides finishing in the top eight of the 2022 T20 World Cup also qualify.
Regional qualifiers will be played in Africa, Asia, and Europe to decide which other teams will qualify.
In total, 20 teams will qualify, which will then be divided into four groups of five who play on a round-robin basis. The top two teams from these four groups advance to the Super Eight round.
In the Super Eight round, the remaining teams will be divided into two groups of four who will play round robin, with the top two sides in each group going to the semifinals.
The winners of the two semifinals will compete in the final with the winners of that game taking home the spoils!
